Violent crime

Retirement Lists reports violent crime only when an eligible U.S. destination can be matched to a direct city-agency record or an accepted consolidated city-county record in the FBI Crime Data Explorer and Uniform Crime Reporting data.

The preferred data period is finalized 2024. Seven otherwise eligible records use finalized 2023 data as a fallback. A destination passes only when both its violent-crime and property-crime series contain exactly 12 monthly rate points. Partial reporting, nonreporting, and an all-zero pair fail closed and are shown as unavailable.

The annual violent-crime rate is the sum of the 12 monthly agency rate points, rounded to two decimal places. Of the evaluated destinations, 665 have an available result and 322 are unavailable.

When available, violent crime may be displayed, filtered, sorted, and used in Compare. It is not used for Retirement Lists Fit or required-preference matching.

Score explanation

Lower violent-crime rates receive higher violent-crime metric scores. For annual rate x:

Score = round(70 + ((250 − max(x, 0)) ÷ 250 × 30)) when x ≤ 250

Score = round(45 + ((600 − x) ÷ (600 − 250) × 24)) when 250 < x ≤ 600

Score = round(((1500 − clamp(x, 600, 1500)) ÷ (1500 − 600) × 44)) when x > 600
