Censo 2024 counted 52,942 residents in the commune, an 18.8% increase from 2017. About 31.8% of residents lived in rural areas, and people age 65 and older numbered 6,313, or 11.9%. Official 2024 indicators put Puerto Varas's reported violent-crime rate at 1,835.7 per 100,000 residents, below the Los Lagos regional rate of 2,197.5 and national rate of 2,222.7. The reported VIF rate was 744.4 per 100,000. The municipality's 2026 security plan recorded 139 home-burglary cases in 2024 and 1,917 incivilities cases, including public alcohol use and disorder.
