Higgs Beach, Smathers Beach, Truman Waterfront Park, and Fort Zachary Taylor State Park offer several kinds of outdoor time. Higgs Beach has a pier, playgrounds, picnic areas, a dog park, tennis and volleyball courts, showers, and restrooms. Smathers is the city's largest public beach. Truman Waterfront adds an accessible waterfront, trails, a bike trail, playground, picnic areas, restrooms, and a splash pad. Fort Zachary Taylor adds a state managed beach, swimming, snorkeling, fishing, nature, and history.

The Key West Historic District, museums, historic markers, the public library, meals, and local events can keep a week from depending on beach weather. The island can suit someone who enjoys a compact setting with frequent outdoor and cultural choices. Heat, humidity, uneven surfaces, parking, crowds, fees, salt, storm conditions, and the return trip still determine whether an attractive outing is comfortable and repeatable.

Census identifies Key West city as a 5.60 square mile incorporated place. City floodplain guidance applies within corporate limits, while nearby addresses can use Key West in their mailing address without being inside the city. Check the parcel, zoning, taxes, flood maps, utility responsibility, and municipal services rather than relying on the mailing city.

Key West International Airport, fixed route transit, on demand rides, the Lower Keys Shuttle connection, library services, and Monroe County special transportation add practical options. The city still has seasonal traffic and an island evacuation problem. Visit from the proposed home to groceries, pharmacy, care, transit, airport, beach, library, and a quiet return before deciding that a compact island week will be easy.

Lower Keys Medical Center describes a 24 hour emergency and acute care hospital with 167 licensed beds. The Florida HealthFinder profile lists 118 licensed beds, including 103 acute care and 15 skilled nursing beds, with a license period beginning July 30, 2025. The two official records do not agree, so the bed figures should not be treated as settled. The hospital does list emergency care, and an AHCA inventory lists emergency medicine, cardiology, gastroenterology, and general surgery.

Keys Medical Group lists Key West primary care locations along with cardiology, gastroenterology, orthopedics, ENT, psychiatry, pulmonology, and other specialties. The catalog maps two nearby hospitals, six pharmacies, and 44 selected Medicare listed specialists, while the HRSA query finds two likely adult primary care sites within 15 miles. Confirm who accepts new patients, insurance, appointments, prescriptions, rehabilitation, emergency transport, and which needs move to Miami or another center.

The prepared FBI agency record for Key West Police Department reports complete 2024 monthly submissions and annual rates of 352.28 violent offenses per 100,000 and 2,279.64 property offenses per 100,000. Treat those as agency reported figures only. Agency geography, visitor population, and reporting definitions limit interpretation, and the numbers do not describe every neighborhood or a personal risk.

The city reports three staffed fire stations plus an unmanned Sunset Key station. Its EMS information lists three ambulances at each staffed station, 47 paramedics, 95 certified firefighters or EMTs, and more than 7,000 annual calls. The city says coastal and shallow flooding affect Key West, and its evacuation guidance generally moves visitors before residents for Category 1 and 2 storms. Review flood maps, finished floor elevation, insurance, shelter and departure instructions, reentry, traffic, power, water, medicines, pets, and the route to care for the exact home.

NOAA and the National Weather Service report 1991 to 2020 Key West normals of 83.7 degrees Fahrenheit for average daily maximum temperature, 78.9 degrees for average temperature, 74.0 degrees for average minimum temperature, and 40.44 inches of annual precipitation. January normals are 74.7 degrees high and 62.9 degrees low with 2.01 inches of rain. July is 89.8 high and 77.8 low with 4.48 inches, while September averages 8.24 inches of rain.

The climate supports year round outdoor choices, but heat, humidity, lightning, heavy rain, salt, mold, cooling costs, and hurricane preparation are part of ordinary life. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. Check windows, roof, shutters, drainage, power, water, flood insurance, indoor comfort, evacuation destinations, and the route home rather than judging the island from a pleasant winter visit.
