How Are Nearby Pharmacies Counted?

The published number is an ungraded count. It does not establish pharmacy access, convenience, quality, sufficiency, travel time, current hours, medication inventory or prescription availability.

Across the current 987-city catalog, 880 destinations have an available direct count and 107 show Source unavailable. Forty-six destinations have a valid observed count of zero.

A published integer is the number of qualifying official-source records found using the method assigned to that destination. The methods are source-specific. Retirement Lists does not convert a county, metro, regional or national total into a city count, or treat every official source as though it used the same boundary, record structure or pharmacy classification.

A municipality count and a 12-kilometer radius count describe different geographic areas. Counts from different countries may also rely on different official classifications. Treat the number as place-specific source context, not as one standardized international access measure. The direct count retains its existing discovery filter and sort eligibility; this repair adds no new eligibility and does not make the count eligible for Fit, hard constraints, required preferences or Compare.

For the United States, the deduplication unit is the active city-and-state location address associated with a qualifying organization NPI after the bounded pagination-stability union. The result must not be described as a count of unique organizations. Huatulco and Lake Chapala retain explicit radius labels and must not be presented as municipality or locality totals.

A larger-area count can be accurate for that larger area while still being misleading as a destination value. Retirement Lists therefore requires the source artifact, destination identity, source key, source URL, source period and geographic match needed by the applicable method.

If the required evidence cannot be reproduced, the page shows Source unavailable. A county, metro, neighboring municipality, regional map result or country total is not substituted as city truth. The only special fallback is the separately labeled 12-kilometer Mexico radius artifact used for exactly two destinations: Huatulco and Lake Chapala.

Zero means the required source and geographic match were available and the method found no qualifying records. Zero remains an available observed value. It does not prove that no pharmacy serves the surrounding area, that prescriptions cannot be obtained or that care is inaccessible.

Source unavailable means Retirement Lists could not reproduce the count under the required source and geography rules. An unavailable result is not converted to zero and is not filled with a broader-area estimate.

The dates below describe different parts of the evidence trail. A source period identifies when the underlying information applies. A source-updated date comes from the source or supplied resource metadata. An observed or retrieved timestamp records Retirement Lists’ evidence capture. A reviewed date records the methodology review. Capture timestamps are not source-native observation dates, and these date types must not be presented as interchangeable.

The current direct-count review covers 2026-08-03. NPPES has no single national source-updated date for this result. Portugal, Spain and Japan have no distinct source-updated date; Italian evidence has no observed or source-updated timestamp; and the Mexico radius overlay has no observed timestamp. No missing date is inferred.

The count does not establish driving, walking or public-transit time; opening days or hours; medication inventory or prescription availability; whether a pharmacy accepts a particular plan or payment method; delivery, vaccination or other service availability; accessibility for a particular person; staffing, service quality or current capacity; whether the number of pharmacies is sufficient for the population; or overall pharmacy convenience or healthcare access.

Official records can change after the stated source period or capture date. A listed location may close, relocate, change classification or differ from current operating conditions.

Use the count as an initial description of qualifying records found under the stated source and geography method. Check the geographic grain before comparing two destinations, especially across countries.

Before a move or extended stay, identify the pharmacies that would serve the actual home address. Confirm travel time, current hours, prescription availability, insurance or payment arrangements, delivery options and accessibility needs directly with the relevant pharmacy or coverage provider.

The direct count is separate from Pharmacy Convenience. Pharmacy Convenience is modeled and display-only. This page does not document that model and must not be used to infer its formula, rating or eligibility.

This methodology counts qualifying records. It does not evaluate individual pharmacies or personal access. The seven countries do not share one universal geographic boundary, registry structure or pharmacy classification. Cross-country totals are therefore not directly standardized.

Radius methods use a reviewed destination point rather than a person’s address or travel route. Exact-geography methods may omit useful pharmacies immediately outside the matched boundary. Japan excludes address-only records lacking official coordinates. Missing or unreproducible inputs remain unavailable rather than being estimated.

The direct count retains its existing discovery filter and sort eligibility only. This repair adds no new eligibility. The count remains ineligible for Fit, hard constraints, required preferences and Compare.
