How monthly retirement budget estimates are calculated

The Local Renter estimate represents one adult renting a one-bedroom home under the standard recurring-cost model.

Local Renter = rounded one-bedroom rent + utilities not included in rent + groceries + transportation + healthcare

Renter property tax is set to $0. The general model buffer is also $0.

If the selected rent input already includes tenant-paid utilities, the model does not add those utilities again. This prevents the same cost from being counted twice.

The estimate is not an after-tax income requirement, a personal minimum, or a homeowner budget.

The Traveler estimate starts with the Local Renter estimate and adds standardized adjustments for a furnished or short-term-housing scenario.

Traveler = Local Renter + short-term housing adjustment + dining adjustment + mobility adjustment + coworking

Its executable breakdown contains housing, utilities, food, transportation, healthcare, property taxes, model buffer, short-term housing, dining, mobility, and coworking. Property taxes and the general model buffer remain $0 under the standardized renter model.

The added amounts are modeled planning inputs rather than observed spending for a particular person. Coworking is explicitly included even though many retirees will not need it.

The Traveler estimate is not:

• A furnished-rental quote
• A hotel or vacation-rental search result
• An airfare plan
• A visa or residency budget
• A tax plan
• A personalized recommendation

A Traveler estimate may be displayed even when it cannot affect a budget collection. Collection eligibility requires stronger evidence than display availability.

The Couple estimate represents two adults sharing a standardized rental household.

Couple = rounded two-bedroom rent + utilities not included in rent + couple groceries + couple transportation + couple healthcare

As with the Local Renter estimate, utilities are not added twice when the selected rent input already includes them.

The Couple estimate is a consistent two-adult comparison. It does not attempt to model a particular household’s medical needs, vehicles, debts, insurance arrangements, tax position, travel, savings goals, or preferred standard of living.

Depending on the scenario, the standardized total includes:

• One-bedroom or two-bedroom rent
• Tenant-paid utilities not already included in rent
• Groceries or food
• Transportation
• Healthcare
• Short-term housing, dining, mobility, and coworking adjustments for the Traveler scenario

Each required component must be present. A source that supports one component does not, by itself, establish that the whole estimate is eligible for decision use.

The standardized totals exclude:

• Income, payroll, sales, property, and other taxes
• Personal insurance costs
• Homeowner costs
• Mortgage payments
• Home maintenance and repairs
• Debt payments
• Savings contributions
• Discretionary travel
• Airfare
• Visa and residency costs
• Personalized financial, tax, insurance, legal, or immigration advice

Renter property tax appears as $0 in the executable breakdown; it is not an estimated personal property-tax expense. The general model buffer likewise appears as $0 and does not add an undisclosed contingency amount.

These exclusions keep the scenarios comparable, but they also mean the totals are not complete personal retirement budgets. See how taxes and insurance are treated for costs that require household- or jurisdiction-specific research.

The model fails closed when a required input is unavailable.

Retirement Lists does not:

• Replace a missing rent, utility, grocery, transportation, healthcare, or exchange-rate input with zero
• Silently omit a required component
• Borrow one country’s model from another country
• Treat a broader-area or modeled value as a direct destination observation
• Assume that one supported component makes the completed estimate eligible for ranking or collection use

If a required component cannot be supported, the affected total remains unavailable.

Across the 987 prepared destination rows:

• 833 have a positive Local Renter total, and 154 are unavailable.
• 833 have a positive Traveler total, and 154 are unavailable.
• 832 have a positive Couple total, and 155 are unavailable.
• The same 154 source-unavailable rows have all three scenarios unavailable rather than showing zero.
• Mirande is the additional Couple exception because its required two-bedroom input fails closed.
• The 2,498 available totals reconcile exactly to their disclosed components.

An unavailable total means the required evidence was incomplete. It does not mean that the destination has no living costs.

A total can be useful as a visible planning estimate without meeting the stricter standard for filtering, sorting, ranking, or collection membership.

Budget decision eligibility requires all of the following:

• A reviewed model
• Direct rent coverage
• An explicit source key
• Rent-anchor quality of at least 60
• Approved geographic and source conditions
• A complete set of required components

Current Traveler coverage illustrates this distinction:

The 690 decision-eligible Traveler estimates use direct ACS rent evidence for 685 Census place rows and five county-subdivision rows. Census places include incorporated places and census-designated places. The five county-subdivision rows retain their recorded Census geography; they are not converted into place or municipal observations.

France, Portugal, and Spain estimates are display-only under the current conservative contract. Their national, regional, municipal, or modeled inputs may support planning comparisons, but they do not become direct destination observations merely because a total can be calculated.

A Traveler estimate may affect an eligible budget collection only when the destination passes the complete budget-eligibility contract. A positive displayed total alone is not sufficient.

Under the current release, 690 Traveler rows are decision or ranking eligible. The remaining Traveler rows cannot become eligible merely because their estimates fall below a collection’s stated dollar threshold.

Use the three scenarios as consistent starting points for comparison:

1. Choose the scenario closest to the household structure or planning style you want to screen.
2. Check whether the estimate is display-only or decision eligible.
3. Review its component and source boundaries before treating a difference as meaningful.
4. Add the personal costs excluded from the standardized total.
5. Build a household budget before making a move or financial commitment.
